The event brought together leading scholars and policy experts from China, Europe, and the United States to examine China’s expanding role as a global mediator. Ambassador Thomas Greminger, Executive Director of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), led the GCSP delegation, which included Dr. Alexandra Matas, Head of the International Security Dialogue Programme, and Dr. Linda Maduz, Head of the Asia Programme. Chinese participants included Senior Colonel (ret.) Zhou Bo, Research Fellow at the Center for International Security and Strategy at Tsinghua University, and Professor Li Chen, Deputy Dean of the School of International Studies at Renmin University of China, among other scholars from Chinese universities and think tanks.

The discussions addressed China’s recent mediation efforts in the Middle East—such as brokering the 2023 Iran-Saudi Arabia agreement and facilitating the 2024 Palestinian peace talks in Beijing—as well as its mediation roles in Myanmar, South Sudan, and the Korean Peninsula. Participants also explored China’s potential role in a future Ukraine peace process. In addition, the symposium featured discussions on global collaboration to advance mediation and conflict resolution education and training in China.
